Die Unfehlbarkeit des Klimawandels

From my Science Column at Tageblatt:

Tom - Let’s try it from a different angle.

I agree that someone proposing a theory should have the burden of proof that the theory is true. But what’s the accepted fact, and what’s the theory?

So let’s try it this way…

It’s widely accepted that human activities cause global warming. Now consider the theory “human activities DO NOT cause global warming.” Some people believe that theory (though of course most scientists don’t).

To those who believe the theory “human activities DO NOT cause global warming”, I ask, “what’s your proof?”

Who is Robert Goebbels?

Hi Ora,

the null-hypothesis for me is that of zero correlation i.e human actions do not raise the temperature significantly.

Human global warming is a theory that makes a statement about a correlation between warming and Co2 emission. That is a very clear statement and singles out one factor of very many possible one like sun, ozone layer, cosmic rays, vulcanism, and so one.

So it's on to the supporters of this theory to show evidence that their theory is true.

If you cannot support a statement, you are just a parrot parroting what you have heard.

"If you cannot support a statement, you are just a parrot parroting what you have heard."

That's nonsense. A parrot does not have the capacity to weigh up probabilities; in this case, for example, a probability of whom I am more willing to trust in this matter, such as the great majority of climatologists vs some no-name Luxembourg MEP. That is the kind of decision making humans to every day in their lives. To compare this to what parrots do is simply daft and irrelevant. What do you think Tom, in respect of the upcoming elections in the UK - should there be a short sharp shock with brutal cuts in the economy? Or should there be a slow reduction of state investment at the price of higher debt? Back it up with evidence....

On the contrary, it is highly relevant because people believe stuff without really having any evidence except reliance on authority. The more people say it and the higher their social status the truer a statement is?

Come on, Tom. It's not possible for everyone to be an expert on everything. Are you truly suggesting that people are not entitled to express an opinion on an issue unless they're an expert on it?? People have different degrees of knowledge concerning different things. Of course we rely on authority. Our opinions are based - and should be - on what we've heard from people who are more familiar with a topic than we are. Some of what we do to make our way in the world is to "pick our experts", in other words, make our own assessment as to how far to trust the opinions of people who know more than we do. We do that all the time. We integrate multiple bits of information. We evaluate how trustworthy other people are. That's how the world works - and should work.

You're right that the more we know about a topic, the more reliable our conclusions can be. But people shouldn’t be deterred from expressing their opinions just because they're based partly on reliance on authorities and experts.

P.S. Separately, I agree with your point about the null-hypothesis.

I am just saying that we act as parrots if we propagate statements we don't fully understand or have proofs for.

I also act as parrot as the time... but I would argue that I am more aware of this or at least try to be.

Tom - What's happened to your more recent Tageblatt articles? The latest you've posted here was March 11.

IPCC and Climategate or how to brainwash the public with a socalled climatechange. Or maybe there is climatechange like,it has happened over and over again in the history of the world, but the causes are not what we are told, but have just been used for politics, money and power. Al Gore says hi....
